How to maintain bearings
Share
I would like to introduce a simple maintenance method for bearings, which are the power part of a skateboard . Please watch this video first.
This method is actually used on Prime, and it is the most effective and simplest method , so please refer to it.
It was time for my wheels to be replaced, so I also cleaned the bearings at the same time. I would like to take a look at the pattern with photos.
This time we will use BONES BEARING, the No. 1 bearing brand that is exclusively handled by Prime.
STEP.1 - Remove the bearing
First, remove the bearing from the wheel using a special tool. It is possible to remove it without tools, but be careful as it may hurt your hands.
Remove the four wheel bearings like this. Once everything is removed, it's time to clean it.
STEP.2 - Cleaning the bearings
First, remove the shield so you can see the inside of the bearing. (BONES shields can be easily removed by simply hooking them with a cutter). Then, use a special cleaner to remove dirt from inside the bearing. It dries quickly, so the inside of the bearing dries quickly after spraying. Rotate the bearing with your fingers and continue spraying until it is no longer stuck due to dirt.
Bearings are more dirty than you think due to dust and oil stains. Cleaning is complete when the black stains disappear when you pull out a paper towel.
STEP.3 - Inject bearing oil
Be sure to use special oil for bearings. Generally sold lubricating oils contain anti-rust ingredients, which can also hinder rotational power.
The appropriate amount is 1.2 drops per bearing. If you insert too much, the oil will create resistance again and slow down the rotation.
STEP.3 - Installing bearings
This time I'm replacing it with a new wheel, so I'm going to press fit the bearing into the new wheel. Again, it can be easily installed using the special tool mentioned earlier.
This is the complete sequence of wheel replacement and bearing cleaning. It's a simple task that takes about 15 minutes. You can of course do it at home as it requires few tools.
Bearings are the only power source for a skateboard. Frequent maintenance will greatly extend the life of bearings. And you can maintain the same speed as when it was new .
Why not do some maintenance on rainy days without worrying about getting your hands dirty?
